10 feet high by 20 feet long latex on muslin. Fantasy pirate/ghostship coming out of fog bank on a full moon night with boarding party in long boat making their way ashore. Completed in 10 hours. Done from original sketch for idea and composition. Major lines placed on canvas via use of small guides drawn with chalk at 5' intervals to ensure correct proportions.
Thanks for looking. THANK YOU SO MUCH for the overwhelming support and all of the gracious comments!!! More Info: The 10 hours really isn't that surprising when you realize the brush I was using for the sky and water was a 5" whitewash brush. Once the major lines were chalked out on the primed canvas (1/2 hour) the sky was painted with very fast and big strokes with a big brush to blend the colors.(15 or 20 minutes) Clouds were maybe about 30 minutes. I already had a detail photo of the moon for reference, and that took about 20 minutes. The ship was the largest item and took 5 or 6 hours. I snapped a chalkline for the horizon line to make sure it was straight and then painted the water the same way as the sky, big long strokes very quickly and then the details like the bow wake and the reflections took maybe 30 minutes. The longboat and boarding party was very quick, just the silhouette in black and then the moonlight highlights, whole thing in about 30 minutes. The painting was one long day of about 8 1/2 hrs. I went home, slept on it and then came back the next morning and spent about 1 hour more putting in the fog bank and fixing some small details. Though there is some detail in this picture, the sky and water are huge areas of virtully no detail and help to speed up the overall process. About 80 dollars worth of regular old interior semigloss latex house paint was used. This mural can be rented from the company I work for for parties etcetera and was an original idea and concept from start to finish by myself for a specific display for a client. I also will paint on peoples walls and large mural type contract jobs as well. Please visit my employers web site [link] for contact info regarding the rental of this painting if you are so inclined. Daily DeviationGiven 2007-12-18I was led to the actual submission, but in stead chose Ghostship and artist by ~LatexImage, which is the submission with the artist in the atmosphere which spawned it. I did this for no other reason than sometimes I think its useful to take in the scale and the environment of the work to get a sense of what it really entails.
